Dan Verdoorn is the President of Celebrity Development, the owner of the remaining custom homesites at Pradera in South Douglas County. The homebuilding arm of this company, Celebrity Custom Homes, is also one of the luxury homebuilders in this master planned community. The company is also to thank for the current landscape improvement project underway at Pradera.
1. What is Celebrity’s background and how long has it been building new home communities in the Denver market?
We have been building homes and developing communities in Denver’s Front Range for 56 years. My dad, Don started the company in Boulder County, and Pradera is our 16th major development in the Denver area. We have been involved with land acquisitions and development, in addition to building many different home styles.
2. How has Celebrity been so successful in creating these new home developments?
I think because we concentrate on letting our neighborhoods grow naturally versus cranking out homes as fast as possible. We always start with good land first, and then we allow the value of the land and neighborhood to grow at its own pace, to “age” like a fine wine.
3. What brought you to Pradera and what do you like best about this golf course neighborhood?
Definitely the natural beauty of the land. We love the rolling hills, and the golf course just adds to it. This is the 7th golf course community that we have been involved with; we love the open feeling and lifestyle that a golf course gives. We were really excited about the large homesites at Pradera that give us a chance to build beautiful homes in keeping with the landscape. We are really looking forward to the remaining 90 home sites, which we have not started yet. They have great golf course views, plenty of scrub oak and they back to a 550-acre Douglas County park.
4. What are your plans for continuing the success of Pradera?
Well, specifically, we are introducing different styles of architecture, including more European styles like Tuscan, and we have changed the design standards accordingly. We are also looking into adding more amenities to the last section of custom homesites including an additional pool, community center and tennis courts. And finally, we are working with the existing Metro District to improve and upgrade the neighborhood landscaping along Pradera Parkway and Bayou Gulch Road, the two main roads in the neighborhood.
5. What makes a great Colorado custom home?
Good question – I think it starts with the floorplan, it needs to be open, comfortable and livable. We normally offer a lot of storage space and large mudrooms. I think customers want nice amenities – natural stone and lots of wood, in addition to high-end appliances. At Pradera, people seems to really want outdoor living spaces – decks, patios, and built-in grills to enjoy the beauty of the community. And because of the large home sites at Pradera we are also building four-plus car garages in our homes.
6. What do you like best about being a luxury homebuilder?
It is very satisfying to see families enjoying and growing in their new homes and neighborhoods. I like to see families expanding, living their lives, and using the amenities.
7. I know you have some interesting hobbies, what do you like to do in your free time?
I love to fly my airplane – I built it and I get up as much as I can! Also, being a Colorado native, I love anything outdoors – enjoying the beauty of Colorado!
